How to turn your conservatory into an extension
There are lots of reason as to why you might have decided it’s time to turn your conservatory into an extension. Maybe you’re tired of un-peaceful external noise, finding it difficult to control the temperature of your conservatory, leaving it too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, or you simply want to improve the financial value of your properly. Whatever your reason, there are achievable ways of transforming your conservatory into a multi-functional extension, suitable for year-round use.
Fitting a solid roof
Fitting your conservatory with solid roofing that has sufficient insulation will give the appearance of an extension, rather than a conservatory. One of the most effective ways to insulate your conservatory is to replace your glass or uPVC roof with a solid, tiled roof.
A tiled roof will not only give your conservatory the aesthetic feel of an extension, but will also help you to regulate the temperature, prevent draught and condensation, and reduce external noise. This results in further advantages as better insulation means lower energy bills, and as solid roofs have a much longer life span and require far less maintenance than glass and uPVC roofs, you will also save money on repair work. Metrotile even offer a 40-year weatherproof guarantee on our lightweight tiles.
A conservatory with a solid roof transforms it into a space that can be used all year-round, functioning as anything you like. If you’re worried that a solid roof replacement may prevent natural light accessing your conservatory, Metrotile’s lightweight solid tiles allow Velux windows to be added.
Installation options
Using Metrotile lightweight roof tiles means that you may have two installation options:
Remove and replace
The traditional removal of an existing roof to replace it. This can be done by a professional installation company, or an approved Metrotile contractor, and will involve removing the roof altogether to provide a platform to begin building more secure rafters to support the weight of the roof that will be placed on top of it.
Any items of furniture or belongings in the conservatory will need to be removed during the installation, while tarpaulin or covers can be used to protect the interior of the conservatory. The end result will be better protection against leakage and weather conditions, as well as the many new benefits of a solid roof.
‘Wrap around’
Although this is not generally possible with traditional tiles, Metrotile lightweight tiles are almost 8 times lighter than traditional roof tiles, and means that they can be placed on top of your existing conservatory structure. This will not compromise either the security or look of your conservatory, and will cause no damage to its supporting structure.
It’s even likely that you will be able to continue using the inside space of your conservatory whilst your new roof is being fitted, meaning there is no need to move furniture.
