The best ways to reroof a conservatory
Re-roofing your conservatory is a wise investment if you are looking to make your conservatory usable all year round, and save some money on your energy bills in the long run. If you are planning on re-roofing your conservatory, there are two main methods you can go about doing this and which one you decide will depend on the current layout and structure of your conservatory roof.
Remove and replace
One method is to remove the roof entirely in order to replace it. The new roof will need to be supported and reinforced by beams to ensure that it can handle any additional weight that the new roof carries. Reinforced eave beams should be used, with new columns inside and outside of the conservatory during construction. Of course, you will need to completely clear your conservatory of any furniture and tarpaulin may prove useful in bad weather conditions.
Wrap around
In other scenarios, it may be better to place the new roof over and under the existing roof structure. This split above and below the rafters can be seen in this Metrotile case study. It was chosen because of a window very closely situated to the conservatory roof. This method, therefore, allowed the roof to be installed at a 15° pitch while leaving plenty of clearance from the window so as not to obstruct the view at all. In this particular instance, 50mm of roof was below the rafters, and 50mm above, using a ply insulation board, a VPU and a Metrotile shingle profile.
Stress on structure
Both methods are to be used with caution as a regular tile profile may put stress on the existing conservatory structure, which is why a Metrotile lightweight roof tile is advised. Metrotile’s lightweight tiles mean you don’t need to worry about the stability of the existing conservatory structure as they are nearly 8 times lighter than typical roof tiles.
