Are multi-foil battens as effective as a roof replacement for conservatory insulation?
When it comes to conservatories, we all know just how much of a difference they can make to our homes. However, you may be finding that the lack of insulation with a polycarbonate or glass roof can leave the room feeling too cold to reside in. Both multi-foil battens and a full roof replacement will resolve this issue, but to differing degrees.
Heat loss
Typical types of conservatory roofing allow heat to escape excessively. Glass is not the best at retaining heat and so, incorrect insulation in a conservatory can lead to increased energy bills and a lot of wasted energy.
Multi-foil insulation
Multi-foil insulation works in three ways. It controls radiation, conduction and convection while it does have the ability to reflect up to 95% of infra-red radiation back into the house. The fibrous insulation core also works to reduce heat loss through conduction and convection. The movement of air and vapours are controlled and because it is installed across rafters it also helps to create a thermal break which decreases continuous cold bridging.
Conservatory roof replacement
While multi-foil battens offer a short term fix for insulation, a roof replacement is a much more effective and long term solution. A complete conservatory roof replacement can have effective insulation installed and will not only insulate but it will also give the conservatory shade during the summer when the room can get the ‘greenhouse effect’. A roof replacement also provides your conservatory with a new aesthetic that can match the rest of your property seamlessly rather than installing unsightly insulation without cover of a new roof.
There is no doubt that choosing to install multi-foil battens will help insulation problems but a complete roof replacement will drastically reduce heat loss and keep the stunning looks of your conservatory.
