How to Deal with a Leaky Conservatory
Conservatories are a great way to add space to your home cost-effectively, but unfortunately they don’t last as long as traditional extensions and the quality of their construction can vary wildly. Leaks can be a relatively common issue with older or poorly constructed conservatories and can quickly make them feel like more trouble than they’re worth. Fortunately there are several things you can do to help turn a leaky conservatory back into a pleasant, functional space.
Leak or condensation?
Conservatories are rather prone to condensation and it’s important to make sure you have an actual leak and not just a bad case of condensation before deciding what action to take. Condensation tends to form in conservatories when warm air from the rest of your house enters the conservatory and comes in contact with the cold glass or its walls and roof. Moisture in the warm air rapidly cools, forming liquid water which can then drip to the floor giving the appearance of a leak.
To combat this, try keeping the doors between your conservatory and the rest of the house closed as this will prevent warm air entering the conservatory. You can also try using a dehumidifier to extract moisture from the air before it has the chance to condense into liquid water.
Find the leak
If you’re convinced that the problem is a leak, then the first step is, of course, to find the source! This can be easier said than done, however, as the way conservatory roofs are structured means water can often be getting in in one place, then travelling through the structure before appearing somewhere else.
It is often necessary to completely dismantle a conservatory roof in order to find the problem and then replace any broken parts. This is really a job for a professional and can end up costing a lot of money, meaning it may not be cost-effective.
Upgrade your roof
The best way to guarantee yourself a warm, dry, entirely weatherproof conservatory is to replace the old, worn out glass or plastic roof with a new solid roof. It is relatively easy to add a solid roof to an existing conservatory as long as you pick the right type of roofing. This can usually be done with only minimal modifications to the structure making this a cost-effective, permanent solution. Not only will you end up with a dry conservatory, you’ll also get a space that feels much more integrated with the rest of your home and is much warmer, meaning you can comfortably use it all year round.
