How efficient are solar panels?
Solar panel technology has greatly advanced since it was first used over 100 years ago. Its efficiency, cost and appearance have all changed as researchers have grown more aware of how best to harness the sun’s energy. To work out the efficiency of solar panels today, we use the percentage of natural light that converts into energy.
Typically, the solar panels that are available to us have an efficiency percentage between 11% and 15%. Although this sounds like quite a low percentage, the efficiency is only an important concern when you have a really small surface area of them. The higher the efficiency, the less surface area you generally need. Plus, 11% efficiency is still plenty to provide energy for a whole household.
Different types of solar silicon cell convert energy at differing rates of efficiency, as they range in price and manufacturing method.
Monocrystalline silicon cells
These are the most expensive type of solar panel but have the highest efficiency of about 15%. They are made from a single silicon crystal that is cut down to shape.
Polycrystalline silicon cells
Polycrystalline silicon cells harness around 13% of the sun’s energy. Although not as efficient, these are much cheaper than monocrystalline silicon cells.
Return on investment
Perhaps the aspect most worth considering with solar panel technology, is the price per watt. This will allow you to work out your return on investment for the solar panels, and calculate which solar panel will be cost-efficient as well as energy efficient. Polycrystalline cells will get you more energy for your money, with a 50W voltage at peak power.
At Metrotile, we only use polycrystalline cells in our PV roof tiles to ensure you get a good return on your investment. We even have a 40 year guarantee for your peace of mind. For more information or to get a quote, please call 01249 658 514 or fill in a contact form and we will get back to you.
