Heating your conservatory

Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal and Velux Window

A conservatory, although added to the exterior of a property, quickly becomes part of the home adding more space and value to your property. However, they can become very cold during the winter months due to the glass or polycarbonate roofing which has poor insulation and doesn’t retain heat like the rest of your home. In fact, without the correct heating they can be almost unusable.

Conservatory heating

Many conservatories are built with a heating system that is connected to the rest of the property. This means that when the heating comes on, it will warm up along with the rest of the home. This will make it a comfortable room to use and it also means that the cold air from the conservatory will not penetrate the rest of the home.

Electric heaters

While installing a traditional heating system is a good option, there are others available. An electric heater can serve the purpose but they either have to be left on permanently in order to keep the conservatory at a constant temperature or they have to be turned on prior to using the conservatory so that the room reaches the required temperature. These kind of heaters, however, cost a considerable amount of money to run and are not an environmentally friendly option.

Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating lays beneath your floor tiles and can be an effective way to heat the space. This kind of heating can be costly to install depending on the size of your conservatory and will cost to run plus it will have to be maintained which is an additional cost.

Better insulation

While adding heating options is a good way to keep your conservatory warm, it doesn’t solve the root issue: poor insulation. Conservatory owners could install their own insulation using battens to help retain heat though this can prove to be unsightly and alter the look and feel of a conservatory.

Insulated roofing

A more permanent insulation solution is to install a new roof. Whether your conservatory roof requires replacing or not is irrelevant as solid tiles will guarantee that your roof offers better efficiency when it comes to retaining heat and helps to reduce your heating bills. The way in which it is designed and fitted will reduce heat loss considerably and means your conservatory can be heated up and kept warm for longer than usual.
