Ageing School Roof Given New Life With Metrotile Roof Replacement

Project Overview:
Thornhill Primary School required a full roof replacement after years of deterioration. The existing roof suffered from persistent leaks due to a problematic flat roof detail and the overall age of the building. Traditional roof tiles had become brittle and shattered in several areas, and the presence of asbestos further complicated the situation, necessitating specialist removal.

Why Metrotile?
Given the structural limitations of the existing roof, including trusses and battens that were not being replaced, a lightweight roofing solution was essential. Metrotile’s Slate .9 profile in the Charcoal colour way was the ideal choice — combining the visual appeal of traditional slate with a fraction of the weight. This ensured no additional load was added to the structure, preserving the integrity of the original framework.

Additionally, the specification required a more secure roofing option for added security to the school roof to protect from vandalism and regular footfall, ensuring the recurring issue of the previous roof tiles breaking and causing leaks wouldn’t happen again.

The Outcome:
The installation was completed smoothly and to a high standard by approved Metrotile main contractor Helix Roofing, with installation work being sub-contracted to Jordan Roofing LTD. The Metrotile system not only solved the school’s leak issues but also enhanced the building’s overall appearance. The project was a perfect success, completed in time with the tight timescale over the school holidays with excellent results and a very satisfied client.
