Adding more light to your solid conservatory roof
Some people are put off installing a solid conservatory roof because they worry there will not be enough light. However, there are plenty of options that will help to add light to your conservatory if you decide to install a solid conservatory roof.
Why should I install a solid roof?
Most conservatories have glass or PVC roofs, which are poorly insulated. This means your conservatory is likely to be too hot in summer and too cold in winter, limiting the amount of time you have to enjoy your conservatory space each year.
A solid roof offers much better insulation, helping to maintain a steady temperature all year round, providing better security and weatherproofing, and avoiding the common problems associated with conservatories such as condensation, damp and mould. As a result, your solid roof will help to cut heating and cooling bills. Solid conservatory roofs are also much easier to clean and require very little maintenance, unlike their PVC and glass counterparts.
How can I add light?
Adding a solid roof doesn’t mean your conservatory can’t offer plenty of light and warmth. The options include:
- Velux windows. As well as adding light, Velux windows provide ventilation, ensuring that the temperature in your conservatory is stable and that you have fresh air on demand. With plenty of styles to choose from, you can match your windows to your conservatory and even to the rest of the house.
- Lighting in the plasterboard ceiling. If you don’t want to add windows, you could opt for electric lighting instead. As natural daylight will still come in through your conservatory walls, you won’t need to keep your lights on all the time, so your energy bills shouldn’t be impacted too much. You can choose subtle spotlights, a traditional bulb and lampshade combination, or even a chandelier! If you want more targeted lighting that will allow you to read, craft or play a game, lamps may be a better option. You could opt for a tall freestanding lamp in one corner or a couple of table lamps either side of a comfy sofa.
- Light décor. Another simple way to brighten up your conservatory is to use light, bright colours on the walls, floor and furnishings. A fresh lick of white paint could instantly make your conservatory brighter and more appealing.
