Keeping your conservatory cool in the summer
As temperatures are expected to reach 35°C in the southeast, most of us will be avoiding our conservatories this summer. According to research from Cranfield University, the average south-facing conservatory has a comfortable temperature for only two hours a day. Most conservatory owners complain they’re too hot in summer and too cold in winter, and that they don’t add value to the home.
Why glass and polycarbonate conservatories get hot
Glass has a low thermal conductivity, but is also transparent. Sunlight enters though the transparent glass or polycarbonate panes and turns in to heat, and cannot leave creating the ‘greenhouse effect’. Trapped, the heat accumulates and can become unbearable in summer months.
Ways to keep your conservatory cool:
- Open up the windows and doors, to let air flow and circulate – but don’t forget to close them when you go out
- Install an air conditioning unit – some can also double as a heater, which provides warmth during the winter;
- Buy large floor-standing fans and invest in blinds or safari-style shutters;
- Fix ‘cooling film’ to the glass, to reflect 80% of the sun’s heat;
- Use interior design tips to help, for example cool paint shades and plants.
One long-term solution is a tiled conservatory roof
An option, which is becoming increasingly popular in Britain, is to ‘retrofit’ a solid roof conservatory. They transform a conservatory into an extension, which can be used comfortably throughout the year, and more efficient insulation also reduces bills. This in turn increases the value of your home and the likelihood of a quick sell if you decide to move. Reputable companies expect their solid roofing systems to last for 50 years – twice the average life expectancy of a glass or polycarbonate roof.
