Considerations for attaching a conservatory to a bungalow
A conservatory is a great way of adding an extra, liveable and usable space to a home that can be used for a variety of purposes. It’s therefore important that you consider all of the relevant aspects of installing a conservatory as getting it right will ensure that it seamlessly fits in with your property and quickly becomes part of its overall design. So do bungalow conservatories differ to conservatories on a two storey property?
Do you need planning permission for a bungalow conservatory?
When it comes to attaching a conservatory to a bungalow, there are no planning permission requirements as the laws have recently changed, despite an extension requiring planning permission. However, there are certain conditions that have to be met. Conservatories are generally excluded from building regulations providing that the conservatory is at ground level and is no larger than 30 square metres.
Bungalow conservatory conditions
A conservatory should be separated from the house by external walls, doors and windows and there are building regulations that control the types of windows and electrics that have to be installed and the same can also be said for any other form of extension.
When it comes to the size and height of the conservatory, there are restrictions in place. The size of the conservatory must be no more than half the area of the land that surrounds the original property and the height of the conservatory must not exceed that of the highest part of the roof. As a conservatory is a single storey extension, it must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if the property is attached or four metres if the property is detached while the maximum height is four metres.
Bungalow conservatory designs
As a bungalow can take many different shapes and designs, it means that not just one conservatory will work. Therefore, this highlights the importance of taking a look at the designs that are available and how they fit in with your property. It is crucial that it does not look out of place or odd in any way as this will affect the look and desirability of your home. So whether you are considering a lean-to, Edwardian, Victorian or Dwarf Wall conservatory you must ensure that it works in every possible way.
Bungalow conservatory uses
Considering how you will use your conservatory and whether you need electrics and power installed will enable you to understand the size and style of conservatory you require. Is your home modern and will require a modern conservatory or do you have an older property that requires a conservatory with a bit of character?
Bungalow conservatory roofing
Lastly, you will need to consider your conservatory roofing. Polycarbonate or glass roofing has often been the roof of choice however lightweight solid metal roofing is becoming increasingly popular. Unlike glass, metal acts as an insulator so your conservatory retains heat in the winter and reflects it in the summer. The variety of colours and styles of solid roofing means your conservatory will have a stunning aesthetic, and can match the rest of your bungalow.
